A Guide to Hill Country Towns Near Liberty Hill
A Local's Guide to Burnet, Marble Falls, Bertram, and the Hill Country Towns Near Liberty Hill
One of the things I genuinely love about living and working in Liberty Hill is that we are sitting at the doorstep of some of the most beautiful and underrated country in all of Texas. People who are new to the area or thinking about making a move here often focus entirely on Liberty Hill itself. And that makes sense. But one of the biggest selling points of this location is everything that is within a short drive. Burnet, Marble Falls, Bertram, and the surrounding Highland Lakes region are all right there, and they each have something distinct and wonderful to offer.
This is the guide I wish someone had handed me when I first started exploring this part of the Hill Country. Whether you are already a Liberty Hill local or you are considering a move to this area and trying to understand what the lifestyle here really looks like, this is your introduction to the towns worth knowing about.
Living in Liberty Hill means Austin is behind you and the Texas Hill Country is in front of you. Once you start exploring what is within an hour's drive, you realize just how much this location has going for it.
Burnet is the county seat of Burnet County and one of the most complete small towns in Central Texas. It is nicknamed the Bluebonnet Capital of Texas, and if you have ever driven the roads around Burnet in April, you already know why. The wildflower show in spring is one of those things that stops you in your tracks every single time, no matter how many years you have lived here.
But Burnet is more than a seasonal destination. The historic downtown courthouse square is lined with antique shops, boutiques, local cafes, and galleries. The Vanishing Texas River Cruise takes visitors into the hidden reaches of Lake Buchanan where you can spot bald eagles, whooping cranes, rugged outcroppings, and waterfalls. Longhorn Cavern State Park, just outside town, is one of the most unique geological experiences in the state, a cave carved by an ancient underground river that now offers guided tours through smooth, swirling rock walls and fascinating formations. During Prohibition, it was used as a dance hall, which tells you everything you need to know about the spirit of this place.
Spider Mountain Bike Park on the shores of Lake Buchanan is the only year-round chairlift-served downhill mountain bike park in the United States, which is the kind of thing that surprises people when they first hear about it. Inks Lake State Park, about ten miles from Burnet, offers camping, kayaking, swimming, cliff jumping at Devil's Waterhole, and nine miles of hiking trails through stunning Hill Country terrain. The Bluebonnet Festival held every second weekend in April draws more than 35,000 visitors and is one of the best community events in the entire region.
Marble Falls is the largest town in Burnet County and one of the most charming small cities in all of Texas. Situated right on the Colorado River, the walkable downtown is lined with independent boutiques, antique shops, local restaurants, and historic sites, with Lake Marble Falls providing a stunning backdrop to the whole experience. It is the kind of downtown that reminds you why small Texas towns are worth seeking out.
The anchor of any visit to Marble Falls is the Blue Bonnet Cafe. A Texas Hill Country institution since 1929, the Blue Bonnet Cafe has been recognized by Texas Highways Magazine as having the best breakfast in Texas and was featured in Travel and Leisure Magazine. The menu is classic Texas comfort food done with care: all-day breakfast, chicken fried steak, pot roast, homemade soups, and the pies. If you go once and do not get a slice of pie, you have to go back. Pie happy hour is a real thing here, and it is exactly as good as it sounds. Lyndon Johnson used to hold breakfast meetings in one of the side rooms, which is the kind of detail that captures what this place means to the Hill Country.
Beyond the Blue Bonnet, Marble Falls has an active arts scene, with galleries, public art installations, and live music at Brass Hall and other local venues throughout the year. Sweet Berry Farm is a beloved seasonal stop, with fresh strawberries and tulips in spring and a full pumpkin patch with hayrides and a corn maze in fall. It is one of the best family outings within an hour of Liberty Hill. Lake Marble Falls and Lake LBJ offer excellent boating, fishing, and waterfront dining for those who want to get out on the water.
Bertram is the closest Hill Country town to Liberty Hill, sitting just 12 miles up State Highway 29, and it is one of the most genuinely charming small towns in the entire area. Most people outside of Burnet County have not heard of Bertram, and that is exactly what makes it worth knowing about. The town of fewer than 2,500 people has a downtown district that punches well above its weight, anchored by two attractions that draw visitors from well beyond the Hill Country.
The Globe Theatre is the crown jewel of Bertram's cultural scene. Originally built in 1935 as an Art Deco movie house, it was beautifully restored and reopened in 2015 and now hosts live music concerts, classic film screenings, and community events year-round. Major acts have performed here, and the intimate setting makes any show feel special. The same ownership runs the Standard on Vaughan, a restaurant that brought what locals describe as big-city dining to Bertram in 2023, and is one of the best meals you can have within twenty miles of Liberty Hill. If you have not been to a show at the Globe and dinner at the Standard, that needs to go on the list.
Bertram is also the departure point for the Austin Steam Train, which runs seasonal scenic rides through the Hill Country on historic passenger cars. The annual Oatmeal Festival, held every Labor Day weekend, is one of the most beloved and quirky community events in the region, drawing crowds to a costume parade, live music, a 5K run, and of course, oatmeal-themed everything. It started in 1977 as a good-natured spoof after Bertram was left off the state map, and it has been going strong ever since. Flanigan's Texas Distillery and Winery, housed in a historic 1904 building in downtown Bertram, is worth a visit for its old-fashioned bar and relaxing courtyard.
Llano is a little further out, around 50 miles from Liberty Hill, but it is absolutely worth the drive for the right occasion. Sitting on the Llano River in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, Llano is one of those places that feels genuinely unchanged by time in the best possible way. The historic courthouse square is beautiful, the Llano River is clear and cool, and the surrounding terrain is some of the most dramatic in the entire Hill Country.
Llano's claim to fame in the food world is Cooper's Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que, which is widely considered one of the finest barbecue experiences in Texas. The process here is pure old-school Texas pit barbecue, cooked low and slow over mesquite wood, with brisket, ribs, and sausage served directly from the pits. Lines form before they open and for good reason. If you are going to make the drive to Llano, a meal at Cooper's is non-negotiable.
Beyond the barbecue, Llano is surrounded by some of the most pristine and uncrowded recreational land in Central Texas. The Llano River is a favorite for tubing, kayaking, and swimming in summer. Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is not far from Llano, offering one of the most iconic hiking experiences in all of Texas, a massive granite dome rising 425 feet above the surrounding Hill Country with sweeping 360-degree views from the summit.
