Welcome to Liberty Hill. You made a great choice, and I mean that sincerely. I live here, I work here, and I have helped more families get settled in this community than I can count. The question I get most often from new residents is some version of "okay, we are in the house, now what?" This guide is my answer to that question.
I have tried to put everything in one place: the practical stuff you need to handle in the first few weeks, the local spots you should know about, the community events worth putting on your calendar, and the insider knowledge that most new residents spend months piecing together on their own. Bookmark this one. You will come back to it.
The single most common thing I see new Liberty Hill homeowners miss in the first year is the homestead exemption filing. It saves you $1,000 or more annually and it is completely free. I cover it in detail below. Please do not skip it.
Step One: Get Your Utilities Set Up
Liberty Hill's utility situation is more nuanced than most new residents expect, because your providers depend on exactly where your home sits, not just your mailing address. Here is the breakdown.
Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC) provides electricity for most Liberty Hill addresses. PEC is a member-owned cooperative, which means when you sign up for service you become a member, not just a customer. That distinction matters: members receive capital credits over time as the co-op generates margins.
This is where it gets neighborhood-specific. Your water provider is not necessarily the City of Liberty Hill even if you have a Liberty Hill mailing address. Some residents are served by the City of Georgetown water, others by the City of Leander. The fastest way to find out is to visit the Public Utility Commission of Texas website and enter your physical street address.
If you are in Stonewall Ranch or Grand Oaks of Liberty Hill, note that you will need to set up a wastewater-only account separately because your wastewater is not billed through your water provider.
Atmos Energy serves most Liberty Hill addresses that have natural gas service. Not all homes in Liberty Hill have natural gas access depending on the neighborhood, so check your specific address on the Atmos website. For internet, providers in the Liberty Hill area include Spectrum, Google Fiber (available in select areas), and Grande Communications. Availability varies by street, so check each provider's availability tool with your specific address before signing up.
Step Two: File Your Homestead Exemption. Do Not Skip This.
This is the most financially impactful thing you will do as a new Liberty Hill homeowner, and it is completely free. The Texas homestead exemption reduces your school district taxable value by $140,000. On a typical Liberty Hill home, that saves you $1,000 or more per year in property taxes. It also caps your annual assessment increase at 10% for the school district portion, which protects you from runaway valuations in a fast-growing market.
The exemption does not transfer automatically from the previous owner. You must file for it yourself, and the deadline is April 30 of the tax year you want it to apply. If you close on your home in 2026, file before April 30, 2027. If you are over 65, you qualify for an additional $60,000 reduction and a freeze on your school district tax.

Step Three: Update Your Driver's License and Vehicle Registration
If you moved to Liberty Hill from another state, Texas requires you to update your driver's license within 90 days of establishing residency and register your vehicle within 30 days. Both can be done at the Williamson County Tax Assessor-Collector offices in Georgetown or Round Rock. Booking a DPS appointment in advance is strongly recommended as walk-in wait times can be significant.

Step Four: Get to Know Your Schools
Liberty Hill ISD serves most Liberty Hill homeowners and is one of the strongest school districts in Williamson County, ranked 112 out of 961 Texas school districts with a 98% four-year graduation rate. The district is growing rapidly, with several new campuses opening in 2026 and 2027 including Legacy Ranch High School, Legacy Ranch Middle School, and Lariat Trails Elementary. If your child's campus assignment has changed due to boundary updates, check the LHISD website for the most current boundary map.

One of the most common questions I get from new residents is where to go. Liberty Hill's dining and local business scene has grown significantly, and there are some genuinely wonderful spots that deserve to be on your radar from your very first week here.
And keep September 4 on your calendar. Parker's Mercantile is opening at 1017 Main St. in downtown Liberty Hill with live music from OCB, food, local shopping, and rotating vendor spaces for local entrepreneurs. Open Fridays through Sundays. This is the downtown gathering spot this community has been waiting for.

This is a place that genuinely welcomes people in. Here are the fastest paths to meeting your neighbors and finding your people.

- ▸Your neighborhood HOA: Most master-planned communities in Liberty Hill have an active HOA with community events, neighborhood apps like Townsquare or Nabr, and social groups worth knowing about. Check your HOA portal or reach out to the management company to find out what is available in your specific neighborhood.
- ▸The Market LHTX: A seasonal local market at Liberty Hill Middle School with local vendors, makers, and food. A great Saturday morning outing and an easy way to meet people who care about local businesses and community character.
Insider Tips That Take Most People Months to Figure Out
- ▸The 183A Toll Road is worth the toll on weekday mornings without question. The difference between 183A and surface roads during peak hours can be 20 to 30 minutes. Get a TxTag from TxTag.org and put it in your car before you need it.
- ▸Liberty Hill is an International Dark Sky Community. That means real dark skies. Get outside on a clear night away from your porch light and look up. The Milky Way is visible from your backyard in a way that most people who have lived in cities their whole lives have never experienced. It is one of the genuinely extraordinary things about living here.
- ▸Your water provider is not necessarily the City of Liberty Hill. This trips up new residents constantly. Verify at puc.texas.gov before you assume and before you have an issue.
- ▸Williamson County property taxes are real. File the homestead exemption. Set a calendar reminder for April 30 every year until you have confirmed the exemption is on your account at wcad.org.
- ▸Parking at Costco fills up fast on weekends, especially Saturday mornings. Go early or go on a weekday if you can. The gas station line can be long too but the savings are real enough that it is worth it.
- ▸The San Gabriel River and the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge are both within easy reach and both worth exploring. Liberty Hill's outdoor access is one of the things that surprises new residents most pleasantly.
- ▸Downtown Liberty Hill is having a moment right now. Parker's Mercantile just opened September 4. Wish Kitchen and Bar is right across the street. Dahlia Cafe is a block away. Make it a habit to spend time downtown. It is becoming something genuinely special and you will want to be part of it from the beginning.
